What I Learned in November 2010

Monthly reviews are my favourite tradition. Here’s how it works – every month I come up with some things I learned, and not always the easy way. Then, I ask you all to join in with some recent revelations of your own. And we all learn and grow and what-not. Or at least share a laugh at our own expense, because some of these lessons are both hard-fought and funny. Sound good?

So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in November.

Things I learned in November

1. I learned that if you taunt the weather gods on the internet, it will come back to bite you.

Snow-covered bush
Me: It’s still autumn, it’s far too early to think about Christmas. The Internet: BWAHAHA!

2. I found out a whole lot about farming from the fabulous Amy, and I am enchanted by what I discovered.

3. I learned that my husband’s little sister is engaged, and I am 17 kinds of thrilled for her and her sweetie. They are like a stack of waffles with awesomesauce.

4. I discovered once again that a haircut makes a kid look much older, instantly.

This is what I get when I ask Jacob to smile

After the haircut

5. I discovered that crushed candy canes are really good in homemade vanilla ice cream.

6. I made some Waldorf-inspired felt gnomes, and found that my 5-year-old cannot stomach the Waldorf no face thing.

Gnomes, which we are calling elves, and which Hannah improved with faces

7. I re-discovered the joy of having a really nice pencil sharpener – the kind that can make points so sharp they’re dangerous.

8. I tasted homemade oreos at a local cafe, and in so doing found the best cookies in the whole world.

I get a cookie to go
Mmm, homemade oreo

9. I found out that it’s much harder than it should be to track down toddler rain boots in suburban Vancouver. Newsflash: it rains here. A lot.

10. I (reluctantly) welcomed a TV back into my home after more than two years TV-free. I’m pleased to say that I have successfully limited my viewing, and it was easier than I feared.

  1. That haircut is super cute. Yes, he looks about 5 years older but he’s cute nonetheless 🙂

Yum…now I want an Oreo. At 6am. Thanks Amber :p

  2. Ever since I saw those homemade oreos on your blog, I have been on the search for a recipe. My mouth waters when I see that picture.
I also went on a rain boot hunt this month.

  3. We STILL haven’t found rain boots around here. And it’s pouring today. It makes me want to cry to think of spending $40 on new “designer” kids rain boots which they will promptly outgrow just in time for the next rainy season.

  4. Taunting those old weather gods is never a good idea. You’d think wellies wouldn’t be that hard to come by in Vancouver. My 2 year old has some cute ones with ladybug eyes on them. Oh, and yes hair changes of various sorts can make a child look much older. Just putting my 28 month old girls hair in pig tails makes her look 4. Scary. Oh, and I was just teasing about leaving comments on my blog. LOL.

I have been pondering purchasing one of those wall-mount pencil sharpeners and now that I know they create dangerous weapons, I’m going to do it!

  6. Thank you for linking back to the pencil sharpener post. I didn’t even notice your son’s before/after haircut shots at first because I was all, “Is that that a *wall mounted* pencil sharpener? Want!” I think Santa’s going to have to deliver one of them.

  7. Great haircut Jacob!!!

And Amber, I really need one of those cookies. I think you are taunting your readers with that photo.

Sounds like you had a great month (and got a very pretty tv!).

  8. “They are like a stack of waffles with awesomesauce.” I am so stealing that phrase. Don’t worry, I’ll give you credit, but that phrase is like a stack of waffles with awesomesauce, and I must use it. I simply must.

  9. I learned that a kick-ass wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical, World Trivia Night and nablopomo are all awesome, but that they were a little too much awesomeness for one month. Particularly when the month that now follows is not going to be terribly relaxing. Unless I work really hard at not working too hard.

  10. I learned that I like that zombie TV show even though I just knew I’d hate it.

    I learned a new word… awesomesauce! Oh, wait… I learned that in December, didn’t I?

    Regardless, excellent tradition!

  13. I can’t stomach no faces either! I feel like the creative child will still act out other emotions regardless of a painted-on smile – I know that I sure did.

Can’t wait until I can get dolls and doll-like toys for my son! My friend’s daughter is not quite two and she JUST hit that stage – so excited to Christmas shop for her! (I’d love to hear your non-PVC doll shopping suggestions BTW! I’m sure you have some.)

  15. I totally agree with Hannah, and approve of the way she improved the elves/gnomes.
