What I Learned in March 2010

Monthly reviews are my favourite tradition. Here’s how it works – every month I come up with some things I learned. Then, I ask you all to join in with some recent revelations of your own. And we all learn and grow and what-not. Or at least share a laugh at our own expense, because some of these lessons are both hard-fought and funny. Sound good?

So, without further ado, here are some things that I learned in March.

Things I learned in March

1. I found out that I am a better programmer than I thought I was, and successfully tackled my first solo website re-design.

2. I learned that Scattered Mom makes the best cookies when she handed some out at our Vancouver-area mom bloggers meet-up.

Aren't the cookies pretty?

3. I did my first speaking gig, and it went well. Although attendance can be lower than you hoped if it turns out to be a gorgeous Saturday morning on the first day of spring. But how can you complain about a gorgeous spring day? You can’t.

4. I tried my hand at making ice cream. So. Good.

5. I discovered how fortunate we are to have both a deep freeze and access to a second, small fridge when our refrigerator’s starting relay died and the replacement part took a week to arrive. Otherwise, all my homemade ice cream would have been lost.

6. I learned that if you’re going to do Earth Hour with a toddler in the house, you’ll end up sitting in the dark after you give up on candles in frustration.

7. I figured out how to improvise a skirt pattern, using a skirt I already owned.

A skirt I made for myself

8. I went shampoo-free, and it was not half as bad as I expected.

9. I experienced wonder when the seeds I’d saved myself sprouted. Hooray for plants!

10. I learned that when I’m having a bad day, nothing turns my mood around like stripey over-the-knee socks. I sort of suspect they’re better suited for someone 10 years younger, but that’s how old I am in my head anyways so I don’t care.

  2. Quite the educational month you had! You get an A.
    I learned:
    1. Mean girls hone their skills as early as second grade.
    2. Patent leather shoes worn without socks every day for a month can cause your toddler to smell like a horse.
    3. Peanut butter tastes really yummy on graham crackers
    4. Dora the Explorer band-aids can pass virtually unscathed through a dog’s digestive system.
    Cheers!

  3. I learned a month can go too quickly and end without me realizing it did.
I too went no poo and really enjoy the benefits
I learned being another year older isn’t as bad as I had thought, and having a little one around really keeps you young at heart.
I learned thaf for every temper tantrum my son has, a smooch lots of hugs and cuddle time are just around the corner. 🙂

  4. I learned that Mean Girls actually hone their skills as early as FIRST grade

  8. I love this – mind if I write my own post and link to yours for April?

    In March I learned:
    1. Putting off blogging in order to get other more important things done means that I don’t do the other more important things OR the blogging. If I give myself the time to do what I love, the rest of my day is much more productive.
    2. Bicycling almost every day is really really much more fun than I thought it would be, especially if I bring my camera.
    3. When you meet a bunch of bloggers you’ve been in touch with on twitter hugs are a matter of course.
    4. Cooking with my almost two year old son is the joy of my life.
    5. And that when you, Amber, wear stripey socks it brightens my day too!

I learned that I actually do love the sun, but in moderation.

I learned that my neighbors thought they were making too much noise at the same time we thought we were making too much noise. Love that graciousness-inspiring serendipity.

I learned that I like altering the lyrics of children’s songs with words like “poop” and “booger,” and my two-year-old does not think this is at all as funny as I do. Apparently I am as mature as my stripy socks.
