Playing Hooky

Yesterday morning I got a call from a friend asking if I wanted to join her and her son at a nearby beach. It was a sunny Friday, and I wanted to get out of the house. But, of course, I had some work I needed to do at home. In the end, the sunny Friday won out and Jacob and I were off. We picnicked, we played in the sand and walked in the muck, we blew dandelion seeds on the wind and chased seagulls. Jacob attempted to wake up people napping in the sun, and wandered off with toys that didn’t belong to him more than twice. Good times!

Sometimes, I think, you need to blow it all off and play hooky. Before I was at home with my kids all the time I would have thought that every day as an at-home mom was like playing hooky. But it really isn’t. Even if you don’t go to a traditional job, you still have responsibilities. You still never get through your to-do list. And you still need to blow off an afternoon once in a while to chase your toddler around outside.

What’s your favourite way to blow off some steam when you should be doing something productive? And who do you bring along for company?

PS – I will most definitely not be playing hooky tomorrow, when I’ll be speaking at the Bellies to Babies Celebration. If you’re in Vancouver, drop by and say hi!

  2. It looks like you both had a great day! I’m surprised you actually played hooky. You know, with you being so responsible and all 🙂

  3. That looks like a great park – close to the water, lots of grass and a play ground. Aces!

If I’m alone (which I never am) I like to read a book in the peace and quiet but since that never ever happens I usually take the kids out to a park or beach or similar. If they’re happy. I’m happy.

  4. I love the abrupt change in plan or routine. Thursday I was supposed to study and clean but instead my friend Pam and I went to the craft show and out for lunch and finished up just in time to pick up the kids from school. It’s good for the soul.

  5. scheduling or even just jumping up and taking off is soooooo difficult these days – there’s always a million and one items on the never-ending to-do list (especially it seems, this month!) but with one mountain pass, a lot of snow and some sunshine/fair weather i’ve managed a few ‘playing hooky’ days myself. i even took the Wee Guy yesterday and we had a blast! hopefully i’ll be even more productive as a result?

  6. Well, since I’ve been pregnant I take the kids to the ice cream parlor. Especially after we’ve done a bunch of errands and they’re at the end of their rope and I don’t think I could possibly do one more thing. Everyone’s so quiet and well behaved once they have an ice cream cone in their hand! lol.

Glad you guys had a great day 🙂

    (good luck tomorrow!)

  7. What a great post. I love it 🙂 I am so glad you listened to the sun and went to the park to play! Lovely pictures. I am visiting this morning via Jill’s question on facebook regarding up and coming blogs. So nice to meet you. Your kids look super sweet : )

  8. kudos and the spontaneous outing!

It just must be done from time to time.

I used to get cabin fever when the boys were tots, that’s when the waterpark was a saviour to my sanity. And if the weather wasn’t great I’d drive 45 minutes to see my other house-bound mom friend down-island. Sometimes you just HAVE to get away from the to-do list (and the phone).

  9. Right now, I play hookey most of the time. I hate errands and always hope my husband will do things like get us a new car seat for the baby (he’s WAY too big for the baby seat but we squeeze him in anyway), get groceries, or vacuum. My life is pretty much dicated by the weather and socialization opportunities. If its nice out, I load up the stroller and take off to a park or Main St or wherever the wind blows us. Of course, this will all end one reality sets in..ie: end of EI. Enjoying the moment.

  10. Fantastic pictures.

In winter (hard to think about now), my favourite way to play hooky is to take my kids tobogganing. In summer…we’ll soon find out!

    Good luck tomorrow!

  12. I’ll be playing hooky from work (well, taking a vacation day) on Tuesday. Our nanny is on vacation, and there’s no preschool that day, so it’s wide open. Not sure what we’ll do yet . . .

  16. What a lovely day you had for playing hooky! To be honest, when I was a SAHM, I did this quite often during the spring/summer. I had a friend who lived close by and we would walk to a local park and then end up at her house until dinner and sometimes we would pool our dinner resources and have dinner together as well! Good times.
